About RoamTested

RoamTested is run by Vesper D., a digital nomad currently based in China and focused on travel eSIMs. She buys and field-tests each one on her own phone, on location — so you don't have to gamble on yours.

How we test

Every eSIM reviewed here is bought with my own money and tested inside China — not from a desk. Each provider goes through the same protocol and is scored 0–10 on 5 weighted criteria:

• App access without a VPN (30%) — Does Google, WhatsApp, Instagram, tiktok and co. load out of the box? Tested app by app, on the ground.
• Real-world speed & data policy (25%) — Download, upload and latency measured on location in China. Includes daily high-speed cap, throttled speed after cap, whether the fair-use policy is published, hotspot support, and network coverage.
• Price (25%) — Cost per GB, plan and top-up flexibility, and refund policy.
• Activation & setup (10%) — How painless is install and activation — QR delivery, clear steps, time until first byte.
• Usability (10%) — Device compatibility, customer support quality, and how well the provider app works day-to-day.

Speed figures are medians of three Ookla Speedtest runs at the same spot, VPN off, background downloads paused. App access is checked app by app on cellular data only. Every data table carries the city and date it was tested, and results are re-tested on each return trip.
